‘What is love today?’ asked Angelin Preljocaj in 1994, when he created Le Parc for the Paris Opera. Thirty years later, the world has continued to change, but his ageless ballet has travelled the world.
In a French-style garden, the choreographer draws us into the seductive games of the Grand Siècle and the Age of Enlightenment, summoning up our classical musical and literary imagination: famous pages by Mozart, the Map of Tendre and Liaisons dangereuses.
But Angelin Preljocaj breaks with tradition by introducing a contemporary soundtrack and a choreographic language composed of broken lines and sensual surges.
Like the final pas de deux, where the bodies whirl around for a languorous kiss: a moment of grace that has become the signature of this ballet.
Female desire (Così fan tutte), debauchery (Don Giovanni) and true love (Die Zauberflöte): Mozart’s scores form the soundtrack for the century of Laclos, Sade, Crébillon and Vivant Denon. In Le Parc, Mozart is Preljocaj’s musical accomplice: concertos, quartets and symphonies give rhythm to a work that gives form to the desires of the heart and mind.
