ARTE Opera Season 20-21
A European opera season: ARTE and more than 20 European opera houses present exceptional productions, great classics, contemporary projects and rediscovers captured on the most renowned opera stages in Europe. Every month, new projects are available all over Europe, with subtitles in six languages: English, French, German, Italian, Polish and Spanish. All the diversity, creativity and innovation of the world of opera can be found in the ARTE Opera Season.
5 September, 2020: 7 Deaths of Maria Callas
This 2020-2021 season kicks off with 7 Deaths of Maria Callas in co-production with the Opera de Paris. An opera project by Serbian performance artist Marina Abramović presented at the Bavarian Opera. Under the musical direction of Yoel Gamzou, Marina Abramović will appear in seven films as Maria Callas alongside Hollywood actor Willem Dafoe. Seven different singers will perform the most famous arias of Verdi, Puccini, Bizet, Donizetti and Bellini. For the musical conception of the project, Serbian composer Marko Nikodijević composed new music, highlighting the life of Callas who never allowed a separation between her stage persona and her private self.
