Born in 1984, Raphaël Pichon began his musical training in violin, piano and voice at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique and the Conservatoire à rayonnement régional de Paris. As a young professional singer, he performed under the direction of Jordi Savall, Gustav Leonhardt, Ton Koopman and Geoffroy Jourdain's Les Cris de Paris, among others.
In 2006, he founded Pygmalion, a choir & orchestra on period instruments, which quickly distinguished itself for the uniqueness of its projects. With his ensemble, Raphaël Pichon has performed at the Philharmonie de Paris, Château de Versailles, BBC Proms, Bozar Brussels, Vienna Konzerthaus, Cologne Philharmonie, Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, Barcelona Palau de la Música Catalana, Hong Kong French May and Beijing Music Festival.
On the opera stage, he has directed productions at the Opéra Comique, the Aix-en-Provence Festival, the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, the Amsterdam National Opera and the Opéra National de Bordeaux. In 2020, at the height of the pandemic, he created the Pulsations festival in Bordeaux. As a guest conductor, he will make his Salzburg Festival debut in 2018 with the Mozarteum Orchestra, and will also conduct the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Carnegie Hall's St. Luke's Orchestra, Zurich Opera's Scintilla, Teodor Currentzis' MusicAeterna, the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, and Boston's Handel & Haydn Society. In 2023, he will conduct the Vienna Philharmonic in a new production of The Marriage of Figaro at the Salzburg Festival. In the 2025-2026 season, he will make his debuts with the Berlin Philharmonic and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra. Raphaël Pichon is an Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters.
