Ralph Fiennes Director

Biography

Ralph Fiennes trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. His extensive theatre credits include Antony And Cleopatra, Man & Superman and Œdipus, all at the National Theatre of Great Britain. At the RSC he appeared in Troilus & Cressida, King Lear, Love's Labour’s Lost, The Plantagenets and Brand. For the Almeida theatre he played Richard III, Richard II, Coriolanus, Ivanov, and Hamlet which was also presented on Broadway where Fiennes received the Tony Award for Best Actor. He returned to Broadway in 2006 and received another Tony Nomination for his role in Brian Friel's Faith Healer.

In 2016 Fiennes starred as The Master Builder at the Old Vic theatre. In 2020 Fiennes appeared at The Bridge Theatre in Beat The Devil. In 2021 he toured Great Britain in his own production of T. S. Eliot's Four Quartets. In 2022 he starred in Straight Line Crazy in London and New York and in 2023-2024 Fiennes starred as Macbeth. He first read Alexander Pushkin’s verse novel Eugene Onegin when he was a drama student. It made a lasting impression on him and in 1999 his sister Martha Fiennes directed him in the title role in the film Onegin. Fiennes's film work includes Conclave, The Return, The Dig, The Grand Budapest Hotel, A Bigger Splash, Schindler’s List, The English Patient, The Constant Gardener, Quiz Show, Sunshine, and the James Bond and Harry Potter series. Fiennes has directed three feature films, Coriolanus (2011), The Invisible Woman (2013) and The White Crow (2018) which told the story of the defection of Rudolf Nureyev in Paris in 1961. Forthcoming films include The Choral and 28 Years Later. In 2025 he presents a season of work at the Theatre Royal Bath including new plays by David Hare and Rebecca Lenkiewicz as well as directing Shakespeare’s As You Like It.
