Born in 1954 in Eksjö, Sweden, Peder Freiij studied at the Gerlesberg School in Stockholm (1979-1980) and then at the Academy of Fine Arts (1981-1986) before becoming a painter and set designer. He began designing theater sets for director Karl Dunér: En attendant Godot (1990) and Fin de partie by Beckett (1999) at the Stockholm Theatre, followed by Mariage by Witold Gombrowicz (1996). He also designed sets and costumes for the children's opera Le Chat botté at the Royal Stockholm Opera (1996) and for Jacopo Peri's opera Eurydice at the Drottningholm Theatre (1997).
Since 1992 he has collaborated with Mats Ek on ballets, theatrical productions and films: Êtres lumineux, Journey (1991), Prés Insensés (1992), She Was Black (1995), Dans Med Nästan (1995), Smoke (1995), Solo for Two (1996), On Malta (1996, Théâtre Orion, Stockholm), Sleeping Beauty (1996, Hamburg Ballet), Une sorte de... (1997, Nederlands Dans Theater), Appartement (2000, Ballet de l'Opéra national de Paris). As a freelance painter and sculptor, he exhibits in galleries and creates installations and exhibitions (Rosenlund Swimming Pool in Jönköping; Södertälje Hospital outside Stockholm; "Swedish Style" in Tokyo and at the Yokohama Triennale in 2001).
