Member of the Troupe lyrique de l'Opéra national de Paris
Manase Latu, a Tongan tenor born in New Zealand, is a graduate of the New Zealand Opera School and a former Emerging Artist with Dame Malvina Major at New Zealand Opera. He is a graduate of the University of Auckland (First Class Honors) and the Royal College of Music (Vocal Studies), where he studied as a Kiri Scholar with the support of the Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation. Manase Latu recently completed the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program at New York's Metropolitan Opera.
His stage debut coincided with the North American premiere of Brett Dean's Hamlet, in which he sang the role of Second Player. Between 2020 and 2023, he also appeared as the First Armed Man (The Magic Flute) and a Trojan (Idomeneo) in addition to his engagements as a young artist. Other notable roles include Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni) with the Aspen Music Festival & School, where he was a Renée Fleming Artist, and the title role in Count Ory with Opera New Zealand. Manase Latu has received several awards including the Dame Malvina Major Mina Foley Award, the Circle 100 Scholarship and the University of Auckland's 40 under 40 Award.
He has also received the Creative NZ Iosefa Enari Memorial Scholarship and the Kiwi Music and Patricia Pratt Scholarships from New Zealand universities. He has won first prize in the Dame Malvina Major Napier Aria Competition, the New Zealand Aria Competition and the IFAC Handa Australian Singing Competition. He recently won second prize in the Lexus Song Quest 2024 competition. He is a member of the Troupe lyrique de l'Opéra national de Paris for the 2024-2025 season.
