Biography

Edinburgh-born Malcolm Martineau is recognized as one of the finest piano accompanists of his generation. He has performed with Thomas Allen, Janet Baker, Florian Boesch, Elīna Garanča, Sarah Connolly, Angela Gheorghiu, Susan Graham, Thomas Hampson, Simon Keenlyside, Angelika Kirchschlager, Felicity Lott, Anne Sofie von Otter, Günther Groissböck and Sonya Yoncheva, among others, at venues such as London's Barbican Centre, Berlin's Staatsoper Unter den Linden, New York's Carnegie Hall, Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, Barcelona's Gran Teatre del Liceu, St. Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre, and many others. Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre, New York's Metropolitan Opera, Munich's Bavarian State Opera, Paris' Opéra National, London's Royal Opera House, Milan's La Scala, Sydney Opera House, Madrid's Teatro Real, Tokyo's Suntory Hall, Vienna's State Opera and Zurich's Opera. He has also appeared at the Aix-en-Provence, Vienna and Salzburg Festivals, and presented his own series at the Wigmore Hall and the Edinburgh Festival.

He has made over 100 recordings, including The Vagabond with Bryn Terfel (Gramophone Award), Songs of War with Simon Keenlyside (Grammy and Gramophone Awards), Schumann and Mahler Lieder with Florian Boesch (BBC Music Magazine Award), Mahler Lieder with Christiane Karg (Diapason d'or) and El Nour with Fatma Said (Gramophone Award).

Malcolm Martineau is Professor of Piano Accompaniment at the Royal Academy of Music, London, and Honorary Doctor and International Fellow of Accompaniment at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2016 for services to music and young singers. Highlights of his 2024-2025 season include recitals with Sonya Yoncheva, Elīna Garanča, Simon Keenlyside, Florian Boesch, Erin Morley, Fatma Said, and Patricia Nolz.
