Guillaume Varupenne studied euphonium with Mel Culbertson at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon, where he obtained his master's degree in 2004. From 2003 to 2005 he studied trombone and bass trombone with M. Metz, Bogaert and Fouqueray. Since 2006, he has been principal bass trombone of the Paris Opera Orchestra.
Guillaume Varupenne has won several international prizes, including first prize at the French National Trombone Competition "Spedidam" (2010), second prize at the Jeju International Brass Competition in bass trombone (Korea, 2014), fourth prize at the Intermusica International Wind Competition (Austria, 2014), first prize at the Online International Music Vivaldi Competition (England, 2023), grand prize at the New York Classical Music Competition (USA, 2023, online) and first prize at the BTHVN Vienna Music Competition (Austria, 2023, online).
He was professor at the Conservatoire du 13e arrondissement de Paris from 2013 to 2018 and assistant professor at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique de Paris from 2011 to 2014. In addition to his musical activities at the Opéra national de Paris as bass trombone and double bass soloist, Guillaume Varupenne holds a 500-hour diploma in Vinyasa Yoga and is a passionate practitioner of this art.
