Armenian dramatic baritone Gevorg Hakobyan studied at the Komitas State Conservatory in Yerevan with Sergey Danielyan. In 2008, he was awarded the gold medal and first prize at the first Pavel Lisitsian International Baritone Competition in Moscow, and in 2011 was recognized as an Emeritus Artist of the Republic of Armenia. Gevorg Hakobyan has performed at the Vienna Staatsoper, the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, the Amsterdam National Opera, the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia, the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, the Stuttgart Opera, the Thermes de Caracalla in Rome, the National Opera and Ballet Theatre of Armenia, the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, the Opéra de Lille, the Opéra de Genève and the Teatro Regio in Turin, as well as the White Nights Festival in St. Petersburg and the Savonlinna Festival.
He has worked with directors such as Barrie Kosky, Stefano Poda, Robert Carsen, Lydia Steier, Julia Pevzner, Gegam Grigorian, Mariusz Trelinkski, Marina Bianchi and conductors such as Lorenzo Viotti, Anton Grishanin, Plácido Domingo, Daniele Callegari, Axel Kober, Marco Armiliato, Jader Bignamini, Dmitri Jurowski, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Tugan Sokhiev, Daniel Oren, Henrik Nanasi, Michele Gamba and Oksana Lyniv. Last season, Gevorg Hakobyan made his U.S. debut as Alfio/Tonio (Cavalleria rusticana and Paillasse) at Lyric Opera Kansas City. He also made his debut as Scarpia (Tosca) at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Sydney Opera House. He returned to the Arena di Verona to make his debut as Michele (Il Tabarro) and to reprise the roles of Sharpless (Madame Butterfly) and Amonasro (Aida). In the 2024-2025 season, he will appear as Rangoni (Boris Godunov) at the Amsterdam National Opera and as Scarpia and Paolo (Simon Boccanegra) at the Teatro alla Scala in Rome.
