During his studies with Paul Kuen and Raimund Grumbach, German baritone Christian Gerhaher studied Lied interpretation with Friedemann Berger at the Opera School of the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich. During his medical studies, he perfected his vocal training in master classes with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Inge Borkh. He currently teaches the Lied course with Gerold Huber at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Munich, and occasionally teaches at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Together with his regular accompanist, pianist Gerold Huber, Christian Gerhaher has devoted over thirty years to the interpretation of lieder, both in concert and on record.
Over the years they have won several major prizes, including the Gramophone Award, the BBC Music Award and the Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award. Christian Gerhaher's opera credits include the Laurence Olivier Award and the Prix de théâtre Faust. He performs with world-renowned conductors and orchestras.
In his main roles, Wolfram (Tannhäuser) and Wozzeck (title role), he is a regular guest at the world's major opera houses, including London's Royal Opera House, New York's Metropolitan Opera, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Salzburg Easter Festival and the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence. He has been Artist-in-Residence at the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna, and Wigmore Hall.
