Born in Switzerland, Bernard Richter has appeared on the world's major opera stages, including La Scala in Milan, the Royal Opera House in London, the Vienna State Opera, the Opéra National de Paris, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Opéra de Zurich, the Grand Théâtre in Geneva, the New National Theatre in Tokyo and the Salzburg Festival. His emblematic roles include the title roles in Pelléas et Mélisande, Idomeneo and La Clémence de Titus, as well as Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni), Lurcanio (Ariodante) and the Chevalier de La Force (Dialogues des Carmélites).
As a concert artist and recitalist, Bernard Richter has appeared with the Accademia nationale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai, the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, the MDR Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre philharmonique de Strasbourg, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestra of the University of Strasbourg, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestra of the University of Antwerp, and has performed at the Salle Gaveau in Paris, the Tonhalle in Zurich, the Styriarte in Graz, the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, the Accademia nationale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, and the Konzerthaus in Vienna. He works regularly with conductors such as Zubin Mehta, Daniele Gatti, Teodor Currentzis, Philippe Jordan, Daniel Harding, Ádám Fischer, Iván Fischer, Kent Nagano, Marc Minkowski and Fabio Luisi, and with directors such as Laurent Pelly, Christof Loy, Nikolaus Lehnhoff, Keith Warner, Pierre-Emmanuel Rousseau, Jean-Marie Villégier, Christophe Honoré, Zabou Breitman and Kasper Holten.
His 2024-2025 season includes engagements as diverse as the title role in La Clémence de Titus under Tomáš Netopil in Geneva, Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 under Sir John Eliot Gardiner in Ferrara, Bologna and Milan, Schönberg's Jacob's Ladder under Ingo Metzmacher in Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie, Berlioz's Messe solennelle in Bern, Bach's B minor Mass at the Verbier Festival and a recording of Hugo Alfvén's Symphony no. 4 for the jpc label.
