The Hungarian-Romanian bass Alexander Köpeczi, winner of the Herbert von Karajan Prize, began his musical training as a pianist and accompanist in Cluj, Romania. He then studied voice and made his professional stage debut in 2014. Winner of the 57th Francisco Viñas Vocal Competition in Barcelona, he was invited to participate in the Salzburg Festival's Young Artists Project in the summer of 2021. He will make his international professional debut at London's Royal Opera House in 2022 and will join the ensemble of the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich from 2022 to 2024, where he will sing roles such as the Monk (Don Carlo), Tom (Un ballo in maschera), Ramfis (Aida), Zuniga (Carmen) and Reinmar von Zweter (Tannhäuser).
Recent engagements include Alvise (La Gioconda) at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, Sparafucile (Rigoletto) with London's Royal Opera House on tour in Japan, and Ramfis at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. He made his debut at the Komische Oper Berlin as Sarastro (The Magic Flute) and at the Salzburg Easter Festival as Reinmar von Zweter (Tannhäuser). He has sung Colline (La Bohème), the Monk, the Sacristan (Tosca), Lodovico (Otello) and Leone (Attila) at London's Royal Opera House and Sarastro at the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad and the Berlioz Festival in La Côte-Saint-André.
He participated in the world premiere of Jenő Hubay's Luthier de Crémone. In the 2024-2025 season, he makes a number of important debuts: at New York's Metropolitan Opera and Dresden's Semperoper as Colline; at the Amsterdam National Opera as Sparafucile; at the Atlanta Opera as Fafner (Siegfried). Other highlights include Ramfis at London's Royal Opera House, Der König (Aida) at Munich's Bavarian State Opera, and a triple appearance at the Tyrolean Festival in Erl as Sparafucile, Ferrando (Le Trouvère), and Dr. Grenvil (La Traviata).
