The Paris Opera Orchestra is one of France’s youngest orchestras, even as it remains one of the most venerable, by virtue of the fact that its founding can be traced back over three centuries to Louis XIV’s inauguration of the Académie Royale de Musique; it occupies a leading position in French and international musical life.
Composers such as Lully, Rameau, Gluck, Rossini, Meyerbeer, Verdi, Wagner, Gounod, Massenet, Saint-Saëns, Ravel, Stravinsky, Roussel, Poulenc, Messiaen, Saariaho and Boesmans all wrote some of their masterpieces to be performed by this esteemed body of musicians.
While these 174 musicians principally perform in the pit for shows at the Palais Garnier and Opéra Bastille, they regularly venture out to perform for new audiences on national and international tours, bringing with them their symphonic repertoire.
Over nearly thirty years, they have worked with such renowned conductors as Lorin Maazel, Georges Prêtre, Zubin Mehta, Christoph von Dohnányi, Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, Myung-Whun Chung, James Conlon, Pierre Boulez, Semyon Bychkov, Philippe Jordan, Susanna Mälkki and Gustavo Dudamel.
