Synopsis

0:00 / 0:00

With both pieces in this programme, William Forsythe stretches the possibilities of academic dance to the limit. Rearray, a duo created for Sylvie Guillem and Nicolas Le Riche in 2011 for Sadler's Wells, London, enters the repertoire in a version reworked for the Ballet’s dancers.

Blake Works I, triumphantly created in 2016 for the Paris Opera Ballet, is a hymn to classical technique expressed through fractured lines and geometric perfection, to the sound of seven songs by James Blake.

Swedish choreographer Johan Inger, making his Paris Opera debut, also interweaves a classical line with contemporary vocabulary in a manner as energetic as it is dreamlike. IMPASSE questions the relationship between the group and the individual, seemingly suggesting that we are never as strong as when we are together. All the better illustrating the strength of the collective combined with the pleasure of dancing, three special performances open with the Défilé du Ballet.

An inventive tribute to ballet - Ludmila Pagliero about William Forsythe

By Antony Desvaux

On the occasion of the Forsythe/Inger show that opens the 24/25 dance season, Ludmila Pagliero talks about the revival of Blake Works I and the creation of Rearray.

The Étoile dancer discusses William Forsythe's deconstruction and reconstruction of classical language. She recalls the studio rehearsals and the strong intellectual stimulation generated by such an approach to movement and space.

Surprising in their deployment and playing with effects of rupture and contretemps, Forsythe's choreographies are at once an inventive exploration and a tribute to tradition.

My'Kal Stromile, between heritage and innovation

By Antony Desvaux

Invited for the first time to create a piece for the Paris Opera Ballet, My'Kal Stromile follows in the footsteps of his mentor William Forsythe.

The choreographer explains the genesis of Word for Word and how he drew inspiration from classical dance steps to imagine his own language. In costumes by Chanel, his choreography strikes a balance between heritage and innovation.

My'Kal Stromile talks about his influences, his background and his relationship with music. Finally, he shares how he works in the studio with the Opéra dancers.

Youth in question - Johan Inger on IMPASSE

By Antony Desvaux

On the occasion of the Forsythe/Inger programme that opens the 24/25 dance season, Swedish choreographer Johan Inger presents his piece IMPASSE, which enters the Paris Opera repertoire.

He explains the scenographic ideas that inspired him for this ballet, in particular his desire to explore an increasingly cluttered and exotic space that closes up as it goes along.

He outlines the issues at the heart of IMPASSE, in particular the influence of the environment and technology on the future of humanity, and above all on young people.
