The Opéra national de Paris has learned with great sadness of the passing away of Michel Sénéchal, who died on April 1 at the age of 91.
Two dates particularly mark the career of Michel Sénéchal: in 1952, the First Grand Prix at the Geneva International Music Competition, awarded for the first time to a French singer and in 1956, his performance in Rameau's opera-bouffe, Platée, at the Aix-en-Provence Festival.
A great tenor, a specialist in the French repertoire, he led an international career from Salzburg to New York, via San Francisco.
Invited in 1961 to sing at the Paris Opera in The Barber of Seville, he performed there for the last time in 2004 in Dialogues des Carmélites.
From 1979 to 1991, he was also director of the Paris Opera's School of Lyric Art.
