Calixto Bieito was born in Mirando de Ebro (Burgos) and was the director of the Teatre Romea in Barcelona, the Festival International des Arts de Castilla y Léon and the Barcelona International Teatre (Bit). He began his career in the world of musical theatre in 1996 when he directed the zarzuela La Verbena de la Paloma in Barcelona. That initial experience would be followed by Schönberg‘s Pierrot lunaire at the Teatre Lliure. His libidinous Don Giovanni at the English National Opera, his interpretation of Verdi’s Un ballo in Maschera in the same house featuring a circle of male politicians in suits and ties sitting on the toilet reading the paper opposite the audience; the rape and torture of his Il Trovatore (Staatsoper Hannover) and the prostitutes of his Die Entfuhrüng aus dem Serail (Komische Oper) have established his reputation as one of the most controversial and most impassioned directors of his generation. He directs his actors in a way that gives the singers an explosive physical release. His production of Carmen at the Paris Opera in 2017, setting the story in the 1930s, is imbued with the memory of the Franco dictatorship and a family saga bloodied by the Spanish civil war. He made his Paris Opera debut in 2016 with Aribert Reiman’s Lear. His scenography is rich in powerful imagery, focusing on the permanent tension which reigns between the characters. This season, he returns to direct Giuseppe Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra at the Opéra Bastille.
