Traditional curtain-up

In the 18th century, performances at the Opera began at five o'clock in the afternoon. It was not uncommon to present several works in the same evening and extracts from different operas could be followed by a ballet. On January 3, 1784, the King’s Council of State issued a decree concerning the Opera which stipulated that performances had to begin no later than 5:45 pm in winter and 5:30 pm in summer. It was not until 1803 that performances were scheduled to begin at 7 pm.
