Angelin Preljocaj was born in France to Albanian parents. He began studying classical dance before specialising in contemporary dance under Karin Waehner. He honed his skills with Merce Cunningham in New York and then continued his training in France under Viola Farber and Quentin Rouillier. In 1982, he was hired as a dancer by the Dominique Bagouet Company in Montpellier. Then, in 1984 he created his own company. The Compagnie Preljocaj would then became the Centre Chorégraphique National de Champigny-sur-Marne et du Val-de-Marne in 1989. In 1996, the company moved to the Cité du Livre in Aix-en-Provence and became the Ballet Preljocaj - Centre Chorégraphique National. In October 2006, the Ballet Preljocaj took possession of its new home in Aix-en-Provence designed by architect Rudy Ricciotti: the Black Pavilion, the first production centre specifically built for the activity it houses where artists can carry out the entirety of their creative work from the studio to the stage performance. Angelin Preljocaj has created some fifty choreographic works, ranging from solo pieces to grand formats, many of which are part of the Paris Opera Ballet’s repertoire: Annonciation (1996), Un trait d’union (2003), and MC 14 / 22 (ceci est mon corps) (2004). He has also created several works for the Compagny: Le Parc (1994), Casanova (1998), Le Songe de Médée (2004) and Siddharta (2010).
