A dancer, choreographer and ballet master, Albert Aveline spent his entire career at the Paris Opera. He entered the Ballet School in 1894 and joined the company in 1905, dancing with it until 1934. He premiered the lead roles in ballets by Staats and Clustine and performed the role of the prince alongside Olga Spessivtseva in Giselle in 1924, when the ballet returned to the repertoire. His name is inseparable from that of Carlotta Zambelli with whom he danced Les Deux Pigeons in 1912. He ran the Ballet School with her from 1920 to 1935 and then by himself until 1956. Along with Leo Staats, he helped foster a renewed appreciation for male dancers within the Paris Opera Ballet where the casting of women in male roles was still common practise. He enjoyed considerable success as a choreographer: La Grisi in 1935, Elvire in 1937, Le Festin de l’araignée in 1939, La Grande Jatte in 1950 and the prologue of Les Indes galantes in 1952. He also arranged a version of Jeux d’enfants for the pupils of the Ballet School (1941). In 1945, he took over the organisation of the Paris Opera Ballet’s Défilé, until then according to Serge Lifar’s instructions, and, for the male dancers, introduced the “romantic” costumes we still see today.
