Biography

Tugan Sokhiev trained with Ilya Musin at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. He was Music Director of the Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse from 2008 to 2022 and Music Director of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow from 2014 to 2022. He regularly conducts the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as the Vienna and Munich Philharmonic Orchestras, with whom he tours regularly.

In Europe, he is also an annual guest of the Dresden Staatskapelle, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Philharmonia and the Orchestra of the National Academy of St. Cecilia. In the United States, he is also a guest of leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Boston and Chicago symphony orchestras. He spends several weeks each season with the NHK Symphony Orchestra. His discography is rich and varied, notably with the Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse (recordings for Naïve and Warner Classics, including a Diapason d'Or in 2020).

He has also recorded with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, of which he was principal conductor from 2012 to 2016 (Sony Classical).He has collaborated with EuroArts on a series of DVDs with the Berlin DSO, the Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse and the Berlin Philharmonic. In December 2023, Tugan Sokhiev conducted the Dresden Staatskapelle's three New Year's concerts from the Semperoper, which were broadcast on ZDR television. Keen to share his expertise with future generations of musicians, he founded a conducting academy in Toulouse and works with young musicians at the Angelika Prokopp Summer Academy of the Vienna Philharmonic and the Academy of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. He is the patron of “The Philharmonic Brass” education system, and is collaborating with the musicians of this ensemble on their first CD.
