Born in Austria, Otto Pichler studied in Salzburg and Vienna, and has been working as a choreographer and stage director since 2000. His choreographic productions include Mitridate, re di Ponto at the Salzburg Festival, Turandot at the Cologne Opera, Pentesilea at the Semperoper in Dresden, Aida at La Monnaie in Brussels and La Force du destin at the National Opera in Amsterdam and the Royal Opera House in London. He collaborates regularly with Barrie Kosky, both at Berlin's Komische Oper (Kiss me, Kate, L'Orfeo, Ball im Savoy, La Belle Hélène, West Side Story - for which he is also co-director -, Les Perles de Cléopâtre, Anatevka, Candide, Les Bassarides, Frühlingsstürme, the All-Singing, All-Dancing Yiddish Revue and, more recently, Chicago), Glyndebourne Festival (Saul), Bayerische Staatsoper Munich (L'Ange de feu, La Chauve-souris), Frankfurt Opera (Carmen), Royal Opera House London (Le Nez), Opéra de Dijon (Les Boréades), Festival d'Aix-en-Provence (Le Coq d'or), National Opera Amsterdam (Turandot) and Salzburg Festival (Orphée aux Enfers).
In 2006, Otto Pichler made his stage debut with Jesus Christ Superstar, followed by Zwei Herzen im Dreivierteltakt, Jekyll & Hyde and Hello Dolly. His production of Princesse Czardas is co-produced by the Augsburg Theater and the Magdeburg Theater. In 2021, he will direct Märchen im Grand Hotel at the Nuremberg Opera and The Merry Widow at the Landestheater Detmold. He recently directed Frau Luna at the Tiroler Landestheater.
