Olaf Schmitt first studied theatre, cinema and music at Frankfurt am Main before becoming in 2005 dramaturg at Heidelberg Theatre. He joined in 2008 the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich and then, in 2014, the Bregenz Festival. In the meantime, he has been working as freelance dramaturg at Opera Köln and Royal Opera House Covent Garden.
He collaborated with Martin Kušej, Johannes Erath, Stefan Herheim, Elisabeth Stöppler and Mariame Clément, as well as with composers Miroslav Srnka and Peter Eötvös. Olaf Schmitt teaches at the Stuttgart Fine Arts Academy, the Bayerische Staatsoper Academy in Munich and Zurich University.
He also gives masterclasses at the South Carolina and Minnesota Universities. He wrote several essays (about Heiner Müller, Heiner Goebbels and opera). Since 2016, Olaf A. Schmitt is the artistic director of the Kasseler Musiktage Festival and works as a freelance dramaturg and artistic advisor for the Bregenz Festival.
He recently collaborated on productions of La Vestale and Salomé at Theater an der Wien and L The Golden Cockerel at Opéra national de Lyon and the Aix-en-Provence Festival.
