Born in Stockholm in 1967, Swede choreographer Johan Inger joined the Nederlands Dans Theater in 199, where he continued as a dancer in the company until 2002. His debut as choreographer (1995), also for the Nederlands Dans Theater, earned him an immediate success: he received the Lucas Hoving Production Award in Octobre 2001 for his pieces Dream Play and Walking Mad. Walking Mad was also awarded the Danza & Danza Prize in 2005.
Johan Inger left the Nederlands Dans Theater for the artistic leadership of Cullberg Ballet in 2003, while continuing to create new works. Since 2008, , Johan Inger has been working as independent choreographer, creating numerous pieces for international companies such as GöteborgsOperan, Ballet Basel, Swedish National Ballet, Compania Nacional de Danza, Aterballetto, the Ballet of the Opéra de Lyon, the Ballets de Monte and, of course, the Nederlands Dans Theater where he was associate choreographer from 2009 to 2016.
Between 2016 and 2023, Johan Inger staged, among other things, his own versions of narrative pieces: Petrushka, Sleeping Beauty (Aurora’s Nap), but also Carmen, Peer Gynt, Don Juan and A Swan Lake. He received in 2016 a Benois de la Danse for his pieces Carmen (CND- Madrid) and One on One (NDT2), as well as the Danza y Danza Prize for Bliss and Don Juan (2020) for Best Italian production (company Aterballetto).
In 2022, Johan Inger became artistic director of Take Off Dance, a training programme for pre-professional dancers aged 18 to 24 based in Seville.
