Self-taught, François Caffenne wrote his first music for the 2004 and 2006 Lyon Dance Biennial parades for the town of Riorges. There, he discovered the freedom of expression offered by musical composition for dance, and decided to get involved. In 2005, he met Dominique Boivin, whom he accompanied on A quoi tu penses? and for whom he created the soundtracks for Don Quichotte in 2009 and Travelling in 2011. It was in Dominique Boivin's company that he met his artistic partner, choreographer and performer Olivier Dubois. He went on to create the soundtrack for his first solo Pour tout l'or du monde in 2006, followed by the show Révolution in 2007, with arrangements of Maurice Ravel's Boléro.
From 2010, he created most of the original music for the choreographer's pieces: Spectre in 2010 for the Ballets de Monte Carlo, Rouge in 2011, his 2nd solo, Tragédie in 2012 presented at the Avignon Festival, Souls in 2013, Elégie in 2013 for the Ballet National de Marseille, Les mémoires d'un seigneur in 2015, Auguri in 2016 presented at the Biennale de la Danse de Lyon, De l'origine in 2017 for the Royal Swedish Ballet, Tropisme in 2019 presented at the Séquence Danse festival at 104 in Paris, Itmahrag in 2021 presented at the Lyon Biennale de la Danse, a collaborative project with young Egyptian musicians and dancers, mixing Western and Eastern electronic music.
In 2020, he collaborated for the first time with choreographer Kaori Ito, composing the music for the piece Chers, inspired by traditional Japanese percussion. In 2022, he creates the music for CHEB, by choreographer Filipe Lourenço, mixing traditional Maghreb and electronic music. In the same year, he worked with director Lou Wenzel, setting the music for the play Brûle Narcisse. In 2023, he composed two pieces, Fêu by Fouad Boussouf, presented at the Biennale de la danse de Lyon, and Waremono by Kaori Ito, in collaboration with composer La Chica.
