Alexandre Beliaev studied architecture and decoration at Moscow University from 1981 to 1987. He was Ezio Frigerio's assistant on numerous productions: La Bayadère, Roméo et Juliette, La Belle au bois dormant at the Paris Opéra, Rigoletto at La Scala in Milan, Contradanza at the Ginza Theatre in Tokyo, Andrea Chénier at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Lucia di Lammermoor at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. He has taken part in several film productions: Volker Schlöndorff's Le Roi des Aulnes, Jean-Paul Rappeneau's Le Hussard sur le toit and Luc Besson's Jeanne d'Arc.
In 2000, he recreated the original sets for Tosca at the Washington Opera. He also designed the sets for Così fan tutte, directed by Josep María Flotats, for Madrid's Teatro Real and Barcelona's Gran Teatre del Liceu.
