Biography

A.J. Weissbard uses light and space to create works for theater and dance, exhibitions, permanent architectural installations, special events and fashion worldwide. He has collaborated with Robert Wilson, Peter Stein, Luca Ronconi, Marina Abramovic, Peter Greenaway, William Kentridge, David Cronenberg, Andriy Zholdak, Shirin Neshat, Gae Aulenti, Fabio Novembre, Giorgio Armani, Brioni, Hugo Boss, Ermenegildo Zegna, CocoRosie and the Martha Graham Dance Company.

His works have been presented at major opera houses, festivals, theaters and other venues in over fifty countries, including New York's Lincoln Center, Los Angeles Opera, La Scala in Milan, La Monnaie in Brussels, Teatro Real in Madrid, Deutsche Oper in Berlin, Tokyo's Bunka Kaikan, Muscat's Royal Opera House, Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre, the Guggenheims in New York and Bilbao, London's Royal Academy, the Shanghai Art Museum, Japan's Aichi World Expo, the Venice Biennale and the Louvre.

Recent projects include Robert Wilson and Mikhail Baryschnikov's Letter to a Man at the Armani / Silos, Vladimir Rannev's Abattoir 5 at the Hellerau European Center for the Arts, Carmen at the Opéra de Montpellier, Mikhail Baryschnikov's Don Quichotte at the Rome Opera and Vittoria Girelli's Self-deceit for the Stuttgart Ballet. His work has been rewarded with a Masque d'Or for lighting design, the IFSArts First Prize and the Latvian Music Grand Prize for best musical production. In addition to teaching and lecturing at numerous institutions and schools around the world, he was director of the Watermill Summer Program. A.J. Weissbard is a strong advocate of arts education.
